Dr. Eric Carver grew up in Asheville, North Carolina within in a single parent home. The highest educational attainment was a GED. At an early age he was directed by school counselors to focus on vocational education or military service because his academic performance was less than average. He participated in his high school Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Program (AFJROTC) and began learning leadership principles at the age of 14. He was fortunate to be mentored by one of his AFJROTC teachers, Senior Master Sargeant Larry Whitt. SMSgt Whitt helped others grow, learn, and build skills in military science throughout the four-year high school program. SMSgt Whitt died in the summer of 1992 due to an illness related to his service in Vietnam. His AFJROTC students carried his casket as he was laid to rest. Despite this painful experience at an early age, Dr. Carver was motivated to earn the cadet rank of Lieutenant Colonel and upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and left for basic training two weeks later. Throughout his active duty and reserve career, Dr. Carver experienced many challenges, setbacks, failures, and eventually learned the value of building personal and professional resilience. He retired in 2022 at the rank of Major and last served with the exceptionally brave men and women of the 919th Special Operations Wing.
