This book was written with his students in mind, especially those whose voices deserve to be lifted and celebrated.

Lift every voice – and every heart.

In this lyrical and visually stunning picture book, Two Brothers, One Song shares the powerful true story of James Weldon Johnson and John Rosamond Johnson, the remarkable siblings behind the hymn Lift Every Voice and Sing—often called the Black National Anthem.

From their early days as sons of a devoted teacher and a proud preacher in Jacksonville, Florida, to their groundbreaking contributions to literature, music, and education, the Johnson brothers’ journey is one of resilience, unity, and purpose. With courage and creativity, they gave voice to a generation—and their song continues to uplift generations today.

Told in rhyming verse and paired with vibrant, heartfelt illustrations, this book invites readers to experience the moment the song was first sung by schoolchildren in 1900, and to reflect on its lasting legacy. It’s more than a biography—it’s a celebration of family, faith, music, and the power of words to break chains and build dreams.

The illustrations by CJ Love bring the Johnson brothers’ story to life with rich textures and emotional depth. His artwork captures both the historical weight and the soaring spirit of this anthem’s journey—making each page a visual tribute to Black excellence, joy, and perseverance.

Perfect for read-alouds at home or in the classroom, Two Brothers, One Song is a timeless story of heritage and hope, rooted in the past and singing into the future.
