A Balancing Act: A Novel

Paule was raised in Brooklyn, New York, by Jewish immigrant parents. Paule was always a rebel and hung out in Greenwich Village while attending college. Her father named her the original “Beatnik!” As soon as she was old enough to make this change on her own, she legally changed the spelling of her name from Paula to Paule, mainly because she was told she couldn’t do that.

She completed her undergraduate studies and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Psychology. Paule and her husband moved to Boston, MA where he continued his education. She took a position with the City of Lexington School System, where she was a Psychologist for more than 25 years.

Paule loved museums and libraries and spent much of her time reading or visiting her favorite museums in Boston. She enjoyed traveling and cooking and was a philanthropist to the Arts.

Lorna and Richard lived just outside Boston, MA, raising their son Stephen until Richard’s untimely death when Stephen was 10 years old. Lorna was a social worker at a mental health facility outside Boston. Being widowed put the sole responsibility of raising Stephen on her. She loved her job, and she loved her son, but something was missing. She needed someone who would be there for her. Who would be an ally, be there, but not too much. What was the likelihood of being able to find a man who would be warm and loving, share her interests in culture and aesthetics, especially art and literature, put up with and be supportive of an emerging teenage boy, and yet not intrude on her need for solitude? She needed that no matter what. But, how long had it been since she’d had loving arms around her?

Is it possible for a single mom to have it all?
